No purchase of information

Journalists and editorial teams at the SBC do not engage in chequebook journalism.

They do not buy information from anyone in exchange for money. It is prohibited to pay for sensitive documents that may have been obtained illegally. Compensation for expenses and/or time spent by informants is permissible. All payments – including for any other (legal) assistance provided to SBC employees working in journalism – require prior approval by the senior editorial management or departmental management. In addition, receipts or supporting documents must be provided for these payments.

Persons who are already paid for their information and interviews do not receive any fees (e.g. media representatives, employees of a company or public authority, think tank staff, professors at Swiss universities). Payment for appearances on SBC programmes is covered by separate provisions. In consultation with managers, compensation may be paid for material (video and audio recordings, graphics, etc.) used in our content. The amount should be based on the recommended prices for programme purchases. In case of doubt, the responsible senior editorial management or department head should be consulted.
